Richie Carter

Richie Carter is a Montana-based realist painter whose work is grounded in drawing, direct observation and a lifelong sense of adventure.

Raised outside Kalispell in rural northwest Montana, Richie spent his childhood drawing, building and exploring. High-school art classes deepened his fascination with realism and working directly from observation.

While earning his BFA in Painting from the University of Montana, he spent a year in Northern France studying language, culture and the European painting tradition. He returned to Kalispell after graduating in 2012 and established his studio there.

When he is not working on large-scale still lifes and landscapes, Richie paints on location—from Montana’s backcountry and the American Southwest to European streets. He sees painting as a universal visual language capable of creating authentic human connection.

His aim is to make striking yet restrained images that evoke emotion while opening a dialogue between the tradition of realism and contemporary life.
