Daniel Keys

Daniel J. Keys is a self-taught painter whose luminous oils and pastels are held in collections across North America, Europe and Russia.

Born in Fresno, California in 1985, Daniel began painting at eleven with a set bought using birthday money. Being home educated gave him the time to pursue that ability with unusual focus.

As a teenager he discovered the work of Richard Schmid, whose paintings became a profound influence. Daniel later had the opportunity to paint with Schmid, who became a mentor and trusted artistic adviser.

Alongside oil painting, Daniel has established an award-winning pastel practice. His work has received recognition from the International Association of Pastel Societies and the Pastel Society of America.

Daniel received the Portrait Society of America’s 2018 Draper Grand Prize, and his work has appeared on the covers of Art of the West, American Artist, American Art Collector, Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Journal, Pastel World and Pratique des Arts.
